Will etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar Work With a BTBRV InstaLatch

Updated 10/19/2026 | Published 10/16/2026

Question:

I'm looking at the BTBRV InstaLatch ball mounts for my truck, but I want something to keep the hitch from rattling around in the receiver. Will your anti-rattle device work with the built-in hitch pins? I'm also not sure which ball mount I need or how much drop, looks like there are several different versions. Thanks.

Hello Jason! Yes, the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar # e38FV is compatible with the InstaLatch. Since it clamps around the outside of the receiver, it works without interfering with the built-in hitch pins on these ball mounts. You can also leave the collar installed when you remove the ball mount.

Just keep in mind that the # e38FV is rated for trailers up to 7,000 lbs, while the InstaLatch ball mounts are rated for 10,000 lbs. If you're towing over 7,000 lbs, you can leave the collar installed but disengage it so it isn't applying pressure to the ball mount.

For the ball mounts, we have the following available based on ball size and drop:

-BTBRV InstaLatch - 2" Drop # BTBRV006 (2" Ball) or # BTBRV009 (2-5/16" Ball)

-BTBRV InstaLatch - 4" Drop # BTBRV007 (2" Ball) or # BTBRV010 (2-5/16" Ball)

-BTBRV InstaLatch - 6" Drop # BTBRV008 (2" Ball) or # BTBRV011 (2-5/16" Ball)

If you don't need any rise or drop and want both ball sizes, we also have the BTBRV InstaLatch Dual Ball Mount # BTBRV012. If you aren't sure how much drop you need, measure from the ground to the top inside edge of your receiver, then subtract the height of your trailer coupler with the trailer sitting level. The difference is the drop you need.

I also recommend the etrailer Lock # e39PR if you want to secure the ball mount to your truck.

What kind of trailer are you towing?

I usually tow around 5,000 pounds but occasionally pull a heavier trailer. Would I need to remove the anti-rattle collar for the heavier trailer?

@Jason you won't have to remove the # e38FV completely. Since it's rated for trailers up to 7,000 lbs, you'll need to loosen it so it isn't applying pressure to the ball mount when towing over that weight. You can leave the collar on the receiver and tighten it back down for your lighter trailer.

@RobinH…looks like Robin has covered all the bases….I’ll jut mention that I have an anti rattle on both my RV hitch and my Wrangler hitch and I have been happy with the performance on both over two seasons .

@Gordon thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear the anti-rattle devices have been working well for you on both vehicles. Two seasons of use is a pretty good endorsement!

I have a 7000lb trailer. The max I pul is 5000 lbs. The anti rattle is all i use and it works well. You have to really crank down on it or it can loosen up. I don’t know anything about the Instalatch.

I like it, holds whatever is in the hitch tight. However it does cut into the stinger a bit and you need to check it once in awhile.
