Replacement for a 73 Inch 3,500 lb Dexter Axle With a Damaged Spindle

Updated 10/17/2026 | Published 10/12/2026

Question:

A bearing failed on my utility trailer and damaged one of the spindles. It has a straight 3,500 lb Dexter axle with a 73 inch hub face and 58 inches between the spring centers. The leaf springs are underneath. Would you replace just the spindle or buy another axle? Do you have a replacement that fits?

Hey Matt! I would replace the axle beam rather than have a new spindle welded on. Replacing a spindle requires precise alignment, and buying the beam saves you from having to find a shop equipped to do that work. I recommend the Dexter 3,500-lb Trailer Axle Beam # DX775GV, which comes with both E-Z Lube spindles already installed.

This matches your 73" hub face, 58" spring centers, and underslung configuration, so it is a direct replacement for your current beam. Hubs aren't included, and with the bearing failure I would have the hub inspected for damage before transferring it to the new axle.

If you end up needing a new hub and drum assembly, you can use the # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K assuming you have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If you need an idler hub instead use # AKIHUB-545-35-EZ-K. Both are designed for 3,500 lb axles and are compatible with the E-Z Lube spindle.

What do you typically haul in your utility trailer?

Mostly lawn equipment and occasionally a load of gravel. I think replacing the whole axle makes more sense than trying to repair the spindle.

@Matt I agree, by the time you pay for a replacement spindle and the labor to install it, you'll probably spend just as much as replacing the entire axle.
