Replacement Hub/Drum And Brakes For a 2018 CrossRoads Cruiser Aire 28RD With Lippert 4.4K Axles

Updated 05/15/2025 | Published 03/27/2024

Question:

Hi, I have a 2018 Cruiser Aire 28RD fifth wheel which has LCI44lb axles. I have 6 bolt 15 rims. I am searching for a brake drum bearing kit to replace my old ones. When I but in my vehicle type into your website, it only offers minimum 5200lb, 12 x 2 drums. I am not sure, but I believe my drums are 10. Do you have 10, or can I replace them with your 12 drums. If possible I would like the 12, which would possibly provide me with greater braking abilities! Your thoughts and suggestions? Sincerely, Tom

I understand your confusion Tom, as your LCI4.4K axles are most likely going to have the 10" Lippert Electric Trailer Brakes # LC66WD. Lippert bases their 4.4K axle on a 3,500lb axle platform while most other manufacturers base it on a larger 3" axle tube with stronger components. This is why you are seeing the 12" brake option and as RV manufacturers often change change parts on trailers based on what is available and cost this is why you will see 2 of the same trailers with different parts options.

The Hub/Drum # AKHD-655-35-EZ-K contains everything you will need to replace one hub on your Lippert 4.4K axle. This includes the bearings, races, and seal. It has your same 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern.

Thanks Bud, Having said that, I was thinking on up-grading the 4.4 Lippert axles to 5.2, which have the 12" drums and better weight carrying capabilities. My wife and I are planning on camping off grid in parts of southwestern States and do not feel comfortable with the limited specs on the 4.4 axles. Question; will the current 15" rims have enough room to fit the 12" drums?

@Tom I absolutely understand. If you can send me an image of your axle tag I can verify the best 5,200lb axles to replace what you have.

@Tom Unfortunately Tom, we do not have any axles in that size. You are going to want to visit a local trailer dealer who can order you a replacement axle in the 5,200lb capacity.

Hello I have Lippert axles on my 2015 Keystone Cougar. I would like to put new brakes and drums on it. I just completed the install on Morryde suspension parts. I do have a picture of the axle plate that has the info, but it specifies 4400lb and the drums have a 6 lug, not 5.......I believe it is 6 on 2 3/4"

@GaryB The 4,400 lb axles are really odd. Sometimes they use 3,500 lb axle brake components and other times they use their own configuration. Best option would be to get the bearing numbers out of your hub and we can match up what you'd need. Since you have a 6 lug bolt pattern that makes me think you don't use the 3,500 lb axle components.

I am having a similar problem. I have a trailer that has a GVWR of 9,500lbs, with two 4,400lb Lipert Axles. However it looks like it has a 3,500lb hub assemblies. I bought the trailer new in 2016, a Crossroads Sunset Trail 26BB travel trailer. Axle: LCI35-SB-85-68.5-NOSP-OS-L-655-7278-30PT-3"-GVWR 4400# Hub Assembly: Axletek BD-65535 Bolt Patter: 6 on 5.5" I measured the mounting studs and they are 2-7/8" all around. My confusion is I have no idea the brake size, and what to replace them with. I could go the 3,500lb rate with Part Number: AKHD-655-35-EZ-K. Or I could go the 4,000lb rate with Part Number: LC66WD as it appears they have the identical spacing of 2-7/8" and are both for 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Drum. Is it possible I have the 3,500lb hubs with 4,400lb brakes? I may replace the hubs as well, and assuming I would use Part Number: AKHD-655-35-EZ-K. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

@Tim This is actually pretty common on trailers with those Lippert 4400lb axles. The brake size is still going to be the 10 x 2 1/4" like # LC66WD, which I recommend using. Since Lippert bases their 4400lb axles on 3500lb axle base, the # AKHD-655-35-EZ-K hub and drum is going to work with those brakes and give you the right bolt pattern and bearings you need. I recommend going with those options if you are wanting to replace both brakes and hubs.
