Question:
Hi etrailer! I have the Curt Rebellion XD 2inch hitch currently on my truck with a Curt Xtra Duty 2inch receiver. I purchased both pieces from etrailer a couple years ago and they have been great. I am looking to start hauling a larger trailer for my business, 15.4k 16foot dump trailer. The Curt Rebellion XD is rated to 15,000lbs with its 2 5/16 ball currently and the reciever is rated to 17,000. I was wondering if I could switch the ball mount to this replacement zinc coated 2 ball C39UR to increase the capacity of my Rebellion XD or am I actually weight limited by the shank size. I would prefer to not have to buy another expensive hitch even though the GEN-Y hitches do look sweet... Thanks for your help!

Hey there Alex!
I completely understand wanting to keep your Rebellion XD, especially since it's been working so well for you!
Unfortunately, swapping to the 20K-rated dual ball # C39UR won't increase your existing hitch's capacity. Your Rebellion XD is rated for 15,000 lbs as a complete assembly, so you'd still be limited to that rating regardless of the ball attachment. That replacement for the 2-1/2" receiver would fit but wouldn't technically increase your capacity so you'd be on your own with that setup.
The good news is that you have a couple of options that'll work with your existing 2" receiver while keeping the shock-absorbing benefits:
Shocker HD Max Black # SHK72GR – Rated for 20,000 lbs with the 2-5/16" ball and offers up to 4-1/2" of drop.
Gen-Y Torsion # 325-GH-1225 – Rated for 16,000 lbs with the 2-5/16" ball and offers up to 7-1/2" of drop.
I'd lean toward the Shocker for the additional capacity, provided its clearance and drop work for your truck. Just remember that your receiver's 17,000-lb rating and your truck's towing capacity still apply.
One question, though: Is that 15,400 lbs your dump trailer's maximum GVWR or its actual loaded weight? If you're towing under 15,000 lbs, your existing Rebellion XD may still work, provided you're also within its 1,500-lb tongue weight limit.
Let me know!
