Looking For Disc Brakes For Dual Axle Torsion Setup On Boat Trailer - 3,500lb Axle

Updated 10/06/2026 | Published 10/04/2026

Question:

This is my first time dealing with torsion bar dual axle boat trailer. I have narrowed it down I’m assuming based off of my trailer information. If you wouldn’t mind emailing me back so I can send you my trailer info to check if I picked correct one. Thank you!

Hi Austin!

Absolutely, I can help you verify whether the Dexter Disc Brake Kit # K71-633-2 is the correct disc brake setup for your tandem torsion axle boat trailer. This is a fit for 10" hubs, 3,500lb axles, and the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern.

The torsion suspension itself won’t change which brake kit you need. What we’ll want to verify is the axle capacity, wheel bolt pattern, brake mounting flange, and the bearing/seal sizes.

Go ahead and send me the information from the axle tag, along with any bearing numbers you have from the existing hubs. If you don’t have those numbers, a picture of the axle tag and hub/brake setup will help too, and I can check everything from there. You can send pictures to me at [email protected] if need be.

Thanks for sending those pictures to my email, Austin! Your trailer has tandem 3,000 lb torsion axles, which commonly use the same hub and bearing setup as a standard 3,500 lb axle, so the Dexter disc brake kit # K71-633-2 is likely the correct fit. I would still recommend confirming that your hubs use an L68149 inner bearing and L44649 outer bearing before ordering. For the actuator, you have two good options: If you want to keep the existing surge-brake style setup, you can use # K71-633-2 with the Dexter DX7.5L A-60L surge actuator # DX49FR, assuming your trailer uses a 2" ball and the actuator fits the tongue. If your current actuator is already rated for disc brakes then you don't have to replace, but most factory ones are for drum brakes and would need upgraded for higher psi for disc brakes. If you want to convert to electric-over-hydraulic brakes, the Hydrastar kit # HYD22FR is the better option. It includes the disc brakes, brake lines, fittings, and Hydrastar actuator. You would just need to run the proper 7-way wiring and use an electric-over-hydraulic-compatible brake controller. Let me know if you need more help with this!
