Electric Trailer Brake Controller For 2014 Tiffen Phaeton On Freightliner Chassis

Updated 10/17/2026 | Published 10/02/2026

Question:

I am looking for an electric brake controller for my 2014 Tiffen pheaton motorhome. I would be towing a dual axel cargo trailer. The motorhome has a factory installed trailer hitch package. Thank you

Hey Alan,

You'll want to use a universal brake controller since the only custom fit harness was from Tekonsha (part 3027-P) but they are not available at this time, unless you can find overstock on eBay or something like that.

For now, the best solution is a wireless option from Curt:
-Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller - 7-Way Plug-in w/ Bluetooth App - Up to 2 Axles # C51180. You use a smartphone app to control settings but the controller works fine without the app after you preset it.

Or

-Redarc
Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness # RED52VR. This is a standard brake controller with a minimalistic know on the dash to adjust the brakes and override. It will get hardwired into your vehicle though since it's not custom fit. Blue wire goes to the factory 7 way electric brake wire, white wire goes to ground, back wire goes to battery 12v positive, red wire goes to vehicle's brake switch.

I think the Curt Echo would be easiest, but if you tow a lot and like the more standard physical style where you control it on the dash the Redarc will be a better option for you.

Let me know what you think!

Curt unit works well for me. No issues. I don’t have the dash button so have to keep my phone near me on a holder to monitor. Getting a call while in use has not affected my use.

@Ron That's good to hear! If you end up wanting to add the button down the road, it is part # C83HR.

I purchased the Curt Echo for my Jeep Rubicon and pulling my tandem axle dump trailer. The module works great and the app on the phone is very easy to use. I would highly recommend the unit for anyone not wanting to install and wire a trailer brake controller.

@ClaudeS That's great feedback, thank you so much! How does the Rubicon like pulling that trailer?

The Curt controller was easy to install and worked well as we pulled a 16’ travel trailer behind our Ford Ranger

The Curt Echo did not work well for me. I keep losing BT connection which was very frustrating. I'm not sure why, but I think it had to do with the fact that my 2001 Winnebago has a factory 6-pin trailer wiring port, and I had to use a 7-pin adapter with the Curt Echo. Another thing I found with that 6-pin to 7-pin adapter is that when I left it connected to my travel trailer, the LED brake lights would constantly be lit, albeit veerrry dimly, even if I was not connected to the towing vehicle. Something about the 6-pin to 7-pin adapter is not quite right, and somehow connections that aren't supposed to be made are getting made. I ended up not using the Curt Echo because of this. If you have a true 7-pin port on your rig, you should be fine. I will say the Curt Echo, when it did work, was extremely easy to use and I would recommend keeping your phone on a mount at arm's reach so you can see what's going on at all times.

@RobM Hey Rob. That is interesting indeed. But when it loses BT connection, it should still function fine based on the settings preset on it. Were you actually losing electric brakes and everything? If so, that sounds like what you were saying with the 6 way to 7 way how there might be an issue and maybe it was actually cutting all power, not just the BT connection. I'd check if everything was wired up to match the proper 7 way layout. As far as the led light on, that is normal as some vehicles send power to the 7 way even when the vehicle is off.
