Troubleshooting B and W Companion Slider for Ram Rail Kit that Won't Slide with Weight on Hitch

Updated 08/23/2026 | Published 08/19/2026

Question:

Hi, I have this product installed in our 2025 RAM dually, with OEM 5th wheel prep. I cannot seem to get the slider mechanism to unlock when there is weight of the camper on the hitch. I have to landing gear to take weight off the truck, then I can throw the lever to unlock the slider. Is there an adjustment for this? Thanks

Hey Tracy, it looks like you have had the B and W Companion hitch part # BWRVK3670 since May of this year. Has it been having this problem from day one or has it been a problem that has gotten worse over time? We've seen this problem one other time and the issue was that the the latches on the hitch weren't pulling down evenly and it was slightly warping the assembly which was then binding up the slider. I would experiment with different tightnesses of the latches to see if you can get it to work and I bet that will be what frees it up. Try to get a uniform tightness for all 4 of the latches.

Unfortunately I haven't egen tried to use the slider function. I bought the slider just because but haven't had a need to try and use it. Wish I could help. I did find on my 2025 Ram 2500 short box that after the first trip the hitch had settled in and I had to tighten the pucks a bit after finding the handles quite a bit looser than originally. You might check that and see if it makes a difference. I tightened enough so I had to use a rubber mallet to get them closed enough to insert the pin.

Tracy, I have since changed trucks and camper, we upgraded to a 5th wheel Brinkley. Anyway when we had the slide hitch we were not crazy about it, it would bind up and slam hard to open and close the hitch. I would look at the Curt slide hitch if I was to do it again.

@Mike sorry to hear that but thanks for sharing! What hitch are you using with your new truck and the Brinkley?

@JamesonC I am using a stationary Curt hitch but my Dually has an 8 foot bed so I don’t need the slide hitch.

@Mike makes sense, which Curt hitch do you have? A Series?
