The correct brake controller wiring adapter for your 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and the Curt Venturer Brake Controller, # C74VV, is the Curt Custom Wiring Adapter, # C51322. On the Sport Trac, the factory brake controller plug is behind the dash just above the left knee near the brake release.

If your Sport Trac came with a tow package, then the plug should be active and all you will have to do is plug in and mount the brake controller and run through the setup as it is outlined in the installation instructions.

If your Sport Trac did not come with a tow package, then it is possible that the connector is not there or it is not active. If you found the plug, you will want test it with a circuit tester like part # 40376. One pin should have constant power and another pin should only have power when the brake pedal is pressed. The other two pins are for ground and electric brake output to the 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper.

If the plug is not there or it is not active, then you will want a brake controller wiring kit, # 5506, and the Curt Universal Wiring Adapter, # C51515, to complete the installation. There are 4 wires coming from the brake controller that need to be ran. The white wire is ground and should be grounded to a clean bare metal surface or to the negative post of the vehicle battery. The black wire is the hot lead and should be connected directly to the positive battery terminal via the 30-amp circuit breaker included with the wiring kit. The blue wire is for the electric brake output to the 7-way connector on the vehicle and the red wire connects to the cold side of the vehicles stop light switch.
