Swing Out Hitch Adapter for Use with Benton Basic Hitch Modular Rack

Updated 08/18/2026 | Published 08/09/2026

Question:

I am considering the Benton basic rack for a Ram Promaster 3500 camper. I will be mounting my Yakima roof top cargo container. Can you recommend a swing away adapter so I can swing it out of the way and open the rear doors of the van?

Hey Bill, welcome back! The Swagman pivoting hitch adapter part # S86SR that you referenced will work great with the Benton Basic Hitch Cargo Carrier # B42FR that you are considering. This will give you complete cargo area access to the rear of your vehicle with the rack loaded like you are looking for so it will work great for you! This adapter is also confirmed to work at the rear of campers like your Promaster as well. What are you planning on carrying in your Yakima box?

I have the Swagman. I am telling you it is a beast! I have it for carrying my bikes and I also put a cargo tray on it to carry away my green waste. It works great. It is well constructed. I think it comes with a threaded pin, if not you will need a anti rattle adapter, that is the only thing.

I love mine. It is easy to use and lets me access the back of my van.

We've used the.Swagman for three years now for carrying two recumbent trikes weighing about 110 together plus the custom rack weighing about 30 pounds. Swagman has been bombproof and a game changer! One thing to be aware of is that the Promaster hitch is lower to the ground than a typical pickup truck. The Swagman adds length to your rack. On a severely steep driveway entry/exit use caution, the rear of the rack can grind on the road or driveway. Stay aware of this on unknown ROUGH roads (where you probably shouldn't be punishing your Promaster anyway).

I purchased the Swagman swing away hitch to use on my Ram Promaster Scope van, it allowed me easy access to the rear area where my cassette toilet was located, loved it, plus it is built like a beast. would highly recommend this product!!

Yes the swagman hitch has worked great for us. We have a Ram 5500hd flatbed truck with a cirrus 920 truck camper with rear entry door. This hitch with a Hollywood bike rack. We carry two Lectric bikes with no problems . We have been from east coast to west coast and it is on a 2.5 " Reese 48 " extension. I hope this helps.
