How Do You Address Chucking on 5th Wheel Pin Box?

Hey Alan,

That's a great setup you have! I don't think you need to replace the hitch or the pin box just yet. Instead, we should start by checking the connection between your Lippert Turning Point pin box and Demco Hijacker for the reasoning behind the chucking.

To use the Hijacker with your Turn Point, you should already have a wedge like the Demco Hijacker Locking Plate TurningPoint/5th Airborn PinBox # DM77GV installed to keep the Hijacker from pivoting in your hitch. Without this, the rotating pin box and the sliding hitch will not work properly. It will also cause issues is the wedge is incorrect, loose, or not adjusted tightly against your hitch head. If you do have a wedge installed already, then you will next need to check your Turning Point's turret, mounting hardware, and hitch head for any worn components and if anything is worn or damaged, it will need to be replaced. If all of that is in good condition, then I would recommend an upgraded 5th wheel hitch on your 2019 Ram 2500.

To address the chucking, I highly recommend the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider for Ram Towing Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 20K # BWRVK3670. This will fit directly into your 2500's factory puck system and it has a 20,000 lbs. towing capacity, so it's more than adequate for your Rockwood's 11,460 lbs. GVWR. I prefer going this route rather than replacing the Turning Point with an air or cushioned pin box because your current Demco hitch/Turning Point combination gives us another potential source of movement at the hitch connection.

I prefer checking the Turning Point and upgrading the hitch before replacing the pin box. The Turning Point cannot be replaced with a standard air or cushioned 5th wheel pin box. If you ultimately decide to replace the Turning Point, the replacement options available are the compatible Gen-Y gooseneck pin boxes, which would convert the trailer from a traditional 5th wheel connection to a gooseneck connection.

The B&W's wraparound jaws and cushioned, articulating head provide a much tighter connection and are specifically designed to help reduce the rattling and chucking you're experience in your truck.

Are you mostly using the fifth wheel on highways or backroads? How often do you tow it?

Thank you Jerry for your quick response. I checked the torque on all of the bolts on the hitch and pin box and all were good. I noticed there was a good half inch gap between the wedge and post so I moved the wedge as tightly to the post as I could. I am hoping this will reduce the amount of chucking I was getting. I will follow up once I hitch up the camper and go for a ride
