Durable Replacement Tires for an inTech Sol Horizon

Question:

I need to replace the stock all terrain tires on my Intech Sol Horizon with the Rover package. The current tire size is 235/75R15 and they are currently an all terrain type tire. I dont necessarily need the all terrain capability, but I do like to keep the stock appearance. I am concerned about tire durability and I read a lot about concerns with China made tires. I am willing to consider either an all terrain or a more conventional tread tire. Please provide me with a couple recommendations for tires you know are durable and I should have no trouble with. Thank you!

Hey Dan, thanks for reaching out. I noticed you already picked up a few of the Kenda ST235/75R15 Radial Off-Road Trailer Tires # KE68JR, but I wanted to make sure I addressed your concerns. I know there are a lot of stories online about tires manufactured in China, but in my experience, the country of origin is only one small part of the equation. Proper load capacity, inflation pressure, speed, storage, and regular inspections have a much bigger impact on tire life than where the tire was built. Kenda has been building trailer tires for decades, and I've had good experiences with them. They have a solid track record and I would not hesitate to run them on my own trailer.

Where do you love taking your Sol Horizon? Do you do a lot of longer trips or do you mostly stay local?

Good morning Jesse, Thanks for your reply. I probably got impatient and pulled the trigger to order these tires too soon, but based on your comments, I feel better about my purchase. The stock tires are load range C, with a max 50psi so I feel good about stepping up just one load range with the Kenda's to load range D. I see a lot of user recommendations to just put on something like a Goodyear Endurance, load range E, but they run at 80psi and the trailer manufacturer recommends 50psi. I was concerned about the higher psi and what that may do to the trailer frame, especially since the manufacturer recommends 50psi in the stock tires. Then there are a lot of owners recommending an LT tire such as the Falken Wildpeak, but I was leery about not using an ST tire. Thanks very much again for your reply. I am likely overthinking, but I read so many reports of tire blowouts, even with the Goodyears, that it makes me a little nervous. I completely agree with your comments though that proper load capacity, inflation pressure, speed, storage and regular inspections are critical. To your question...we are the 2nd owners of this 2022 trailer and have not been out yet...still prepping. It is a big step up for us from our pop up, which we used for over 20 years, with the kids. This is new chapter for us empty nesters! Some short trips for sure, but we have some cross country, multi state trips in mind as well. Two more questions for you: 1. I was thinking I would run the Kendas at 65 psi, per the sidewall recommendation. Does that make sense to you? 2. Do you think I should invest in a TPMS? I just don't know how effective it would be. @DanE Hey Dan. Glad I could help alleviate some of your concerns. To answer your questions, yes, I do think running the Kendas at 65 PSI is a good idea. Honestly, I pretty much always recommend inflating trailer tires to the max PSI listed on the sidewall. Trailer tires are tested and rated at that max PSI, so inflating them to the max allows them to carry their max weight rating. Running them at a lower pressure leads to an unknown weight rating which could potentially lead to those blowouts we talked about. As far as I am aware, Goodyear is the only tire manufacturer that approves lower PSI, and they offer charts that tell you the weight rating for lower PSI. Other tire manufacturers like Kenda only approve the max PSI so its a good call sticking to that number. As far as a TPMS, I think that is a good idea too. Especially if you will be taking those longer multi-state trips. They aren't terribly expensive and are fairly easy to install. For you I think it will provide some peace of mind, especially if you are conscious of the state of your tires and want to avoid any tire-related complications. The TireMinder i10 TPMS # TM89FR is a solid option for that. It comes with four sensors, monitor and signal booster. You can add up to 20 sensors so you could use it to monitor the vehicles tires as well if needed. Just keep in mind its best to use the sensors on high-pressure metal valve stems like part # AM20906.
