Is the Trailer's Pre-wired 16/18 gauge Wire Too Small to Work with the Voyager 12V PWM Filter?

Question:

Hello, My travel trailer has furrion a pre wire kit with a 8” tail of approx 16-18 gauge wire that I cut and tapped into with this wiring adapter. The wiring adapter is working just fine and my furrion vision s is finally working with my cars electrical. My only concern is will the 16-18” wires I tapped into be sufficient or will I have an issue with them heating up? I ask bc I’m not sure if this product contains a resistor that will significantly increase the load going into such small wiring. Thanks

Hi Kyle,

The Voyager 12V PWM Filter part # VGR64VR doesn't contain a resistor that significantly increases the current draw on the trailer's wiring. Its purpose is to adapt the wiring between the trailer and the camera system; it isn't a high-power device. The 16-18 AWG factory pre-wire that Furrion uses for their camera prep is generally sufficient for powering a backup camera. The Vision S camera draws only a small amount of current (well under 1 amp), which is well within the capacity of 16-18 gauge wire over such a short distance.

As long as the splice connection are secure, the wires aren't damaged or pinched, and the camera is operating normally you shouldn't have any issues with the wires overheating. If the wires were too small, you'd see the voltage drop or the camera cut out before the wiring would start to get warm.

What do you use your camera system for? Backing or as an observation system?

I used the existing wiring on my 2023 Keystone camper and have had no issues with the performance of the camera. I was able to tuck the unit into the camper wall behind the camera but I have seen some folks posting in camper groups online that they didn’t have space to do that.

@Darryl I'm glad the PWM filter has gotten rid of any issues you were having! For a Keystone, there shouldn't be any issue at all regarding having enough space in the camper wall. That issue is usually seen on fiberglass trailers with limited cavity depth or Airstreams because of their insulated construction.

I have had the unit for a few years now and moved it to RV's as I have traded them. It works fine and the wire tucks behind the camera.

My 2024 Winnie was wired for a Furrion camera. I opted for a Fookoo camera as the Furrion were too pricey. I hooked up the PWM filter per the video on E-trailer and it works amazing. I've had it on for two years and no issues.
