Is there a 6-Way to 4-Way Adapter?

Updated 07/18/2026 | Published 07/15/2026

Question:

I have a 1978 Chevy PU dad used to pull a horse trailer. the light connector on the bumper has 6 flat prongs. Is there an adapter that will allow a 4 pin flat connector like what U-Haul uses?

Hey Fernando. Unfortunately, I do not have or know of an adapter that'll allow you to connect your older 6-way flat trailer connector to a standard 4-way flat that U-Haul has on their trailer's.

My only option would be for you to purchase the TowSmart 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit item # TS48RR and replace your 6-way flat with a standard 4-way connector. You would want to use a circuit tester like item # PTW2992 to test the wires going into the 6-way so you can match up the four you need.

Here's how the wiring functions are arranged on the 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit item # TS48RR.

White Wire - Ground
Brown Wire - Running / Tail Lights
Yellow Wire - Left Turn / Brake Lights
Green Wire - Right Turn / Brake Lights

That’s what I was afraid of. We’ve always used our open stock trailer for literally everything since early eighty’s. Guess it’s time to modernize LOL. Thanks for the info and diagram. Ferny

@FernandoG You're welcome! Actually, that TowSmart 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit item # TS48RR has connectors to redo both your truck and stock trailer's 6-ways into 4-ways. So long as it doesn't have brakes or a battery that needs charging this will control the lights and would be a pretty quick swap out.
