Hi Pks,

Thanks for your question.

As a general rule, Yakima advises not opening the sunroof while crossbars or roof-mounted accessories are installed, as doing so could result in interference or damage. Even if there is adequate clearance, having the sunroof open with a roof rack installed typically creates a significant amount of wind noise.

The only way to know whether your specific vehicle has enough clearance is to open the sunroof and see how it sits in relation to the top of the factory side rails. If the glass remains below the top of the rails, you may have enough clearance for the crossbars alone. However, if it's close to the rails—or if you'll be carrying any gear on the roof—I'd recommend keeping the sunroof closed.

It's also worth considering the width of the sunroof opening, since some Yakima towers extend inward past the factory rails and could reduce the available clearance.

If your 2026 Volvo XC90 has factory raised side rails (with a visible gap between the rails and the roof), the Yakima TimberLine Roof Rack with HD Crossbars # Y23NB is the correct kit.

If your XC90 has flush-mounted side rails (no gap between the rail and the roof), and you'd like to use Yakima HD crossbars, the correct system would be the Yakima SightLine Roof Rack for Flush Rails with HD Crossbars # Y97DB.

Out of curiosity, what are you planning to carry on the crossbars?
