Which Replacement Rain Shield for MaxxFan 5100K Blocks the Most Light?

Updated 07/09/2026 | Published 07/06/2026

Question:

Im considering the Smoke color Maxxair fan cover to replace the white cover that came with the Maxxair 5100K on my Hiker trailer. The only reason for this is the white one lights up like a dome light under moonlight. However I read in one of the reviews that the Smoke color version lets in even more light. Im not sure how this is possible, and before spending such a huge amount for a simple plastic cover, I need to be sure it will actually address my problem. Can you please confirm whether or not the Smoke colored cover will significantly reduce light entry through the vent? Thank you! The cover in question is Part Number: MA05-30520.

Hey Bill, welcome back! The Smoke Replacement Rain Shield for MaxxFan Deluxe Roof Vent item # MA05-30520 is translucent so it's definitely going to let in more light than the solid White Replacement Lid for MaxxAir MaxxFan Deluxe item # MA05-30510. It's made of opaque white plastic.

You can hold the smoke item # MA05-30520 up and see through it pretty clearly. I'd compare it to legal factory window tint and I think what you're expecting is it to be super dark and not let light through but that's just not the case.

Thanks for the response. It's disappointing that there isn't a light-blocking version of the top cover. The vent shade you referenced won't work here because I have the version of the 5100K that includes a ring light. The shade would block that too. Also I need to leave the vent open a bit at night to minimize condensation, so covering the opening would impact that functionality.

@BillH You're welcome! Yeah, the shade is definitely not going to work then. I don't have a better option to help with the light coming.
