Can You Replace an RV Dinette with a Recliner Over Existing Benches?

Question:
Hello! We have a 2017 Thor Quantum GR22. We would like to replace the dinette with recliners, but we have non-movable items under each bench seat. Can this product or another one be mounted on top of the benches if we secure a proper support board where the table goes in the down position and of course remove all of the cushions?

Hi there, that’s a really creative idea and I can see exactly what you’re trying to do with that space.
The Thomas Payne recliner like the part # LC97FC is designed to sit on a solid, flat floor surface and not on top of an elevated structure like a dinette bench. It also isn’t designed to be “surface-mounted” in that way, so placing it on top of the benches, even with a support board, usually isn’t recommended. These recliners rely on a stable base and proper weight distribution, and they also need a bit of clearance behind them to recline safely.
The bigger concern in your setup is what you mentioned about the non-movable components under the benches. Those benches are often built around things like wiring, tanks, or HVAC, so modifying them or building over them can create both safety and structural issues. Even if you added a platform, you’d likely run into stability concerns and the seating height could end up feeling awkward or unsafe when getting in and out of the recliner.
The more reliable route would be to remove the dinette benches entirely if possible and install the recliners directly to the floor, or look into lower-profile seating options that are designed to mount over existing structures. If those under-seat components truly can’t be moved, we’d want to know exactly what’s housed under there and how much height you’re working with before recommending a safe solution.
What’s currently located under each bench, and are you hoping to keep that setup untouched while adding seating, or are you open to modifying the dinette area a bit to make room for the recliners?

I'm so glad I asked! Thank you for the quick reply. I'll have to look under those benches and see how much clearance we have, or if the items underneath can be removed completely.
