Looking For Hitch Extension For 2 Horse Bumper-Pull Trailer

Question:
I need an extender for a 3 horse trailer from my F250 Deisel truck. Have a camper that extends 13 inchs. Thats not quit enough room for when I have to turn my trailer. Is there one that is strong enough for me. And if so what length? Hope there is on strong enough. I dont know what the to tonge weight is on my trailer

Hey Susie, thanks for reaching out. The biggest factor here isn't actually the length of the extender, it's the weight of your loaded horse trailer. Hitch extenders reduce the towing and tongue weight capacity of the receiver because they increase the leverage on the hitch. As a general rule, using an extender cuts the receiver's capacity by about 50%. So, for example, if your receiver is rated for 6,000 lbs, it would be limited to around 3,000 lbs with an extender installed.
The 18" Trailer Hitch Extender # e48YR is rated for 3,500 lbs of trailer weight and 350 lbs of tongue weight, but I'd be surprised if a loaded 3-horse trailer fell within those limits. Before I could safely recommend an extender, I'd need to know the loaded weight of your trailer, along with its loaded tongue weight. I'd also want to know whether you need the full 13" of additional clearance or if a little less would still allow you to make turns without the trailer contacting your camper.
The only way to add a stronger extender would be to replace your trailer hitch with the TorkLift SuperHitch Magnum Trailer Hitch Receiver # TLF1008-30. That will allow you to use one of the TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extensions like part # TLE1536. These are rated for up to 6,500 lbs, or 12,000 lbs when used with a weight distribution hitch.
If you can tell me the weight of your trailer, as well as the length of extension you need, I'll be able to tell you exactly which extension setup will work.

Works great for my little utility trailer loaded with 2 4 wheelers but I load them to minimize tongue weight. I wouldn’t tow my car trailer with it.

Needed 18" for boat ramp launch of 20' pontoon to keep water below Honda Pilot rear wheel axel. Works great for that.

Used the extension hit hitch to pull my 17.5’ Tracker boat behind my pickup with a slide in camper. Made a 1400 mile trip with it in March and it worked flawlessly.

I use the extender for towing a boat. the MacGregor 19. The original trailer was so short that I actually damaged my vehicle during a turn. The extension is easy to use and works great. The additional bonus is that the end of extension is within the view of my backing camera, so maneuvering to attach the trailer is much simpler now.

I used the extender to tow my boat, which is much lighter than a horse trailer. For my use, it worked great. I still use it when towing my boat behind my RV when I have added cargo racks on the back. Hope this helps.
