What Grease Is Preloaded in the etrailer Easy Grease Trailer Hub AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K?

Updated 07/07/2026 | Published 07/03/2026

Question:

Hello, I just purchased two AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K for my Jon boat trailer. I just am trying to verify what type of grease is already in it so I can avoid mixing incompatible types of grease. Will regular marine grease work or is lithium grease in there? Any advice on what type to use and/or avoid would be appreciated.

Hi Bob,

The hubs part # AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K come pre-greased with a lithium based grease, so when it's time to add or replace grease, I'd stick with another lithium based high temperature #2 wheel bearing grease like the Dexter High Temperature Lithium Grease, part # DX37VC. You're asking a really good question because not all greases are compatible. Mixing different types can cause them to break down, which means they won't protect the bearings as well and can lead to extra wear over time.

The good news is you won't need to add any grease right away since the hubs are already packed at the factory. As a general rule, it's a good idea to inspect and repack your wheel bearings every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you ever do add grease through the EZ Grease fitting, go slowly and only use what you need. Putting in too much grease can create enough pressure to damage the rear grease seal, and that's one of the most common reasons seals fail.

Out of curiosity, where do you usually launch your Jon boat, lakes, rivers, or coastal spots?
