Which 4-Bike Hitch Rack Is Best: Benton Shift&Grins, Curt, or Hollywood Destination?

Hello, I am trying to decide on a hitch bike rack. We will use the rack between our 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium and 2022 Lexus RX450hl. Ive narrowed it down to the following: Curt 4 Bike Platform Rack - 2 Hitches - Frame Mount - Tilting Part Number: C18087 Benton ShiftsandGrins Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2 Hitches - Wheel or Frame Mount Part Number: B82FR Hollywood Racks Destination Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2 Hitches - Frame Mount Part Number: HR4000 I like the first two because they adapt from 2 bikes to 4 bikes. I like the third one because it is only 40 lbs, but Im not sure if having the rack for 4 bikes when we sometimes only need 2 makes sense. When we are not using bikes, I plan to remove the rack and store it in our garage, folded up against a wall. Space is limited in our garage so parking with the rack on will be challenging, Even having enough space to store it will be challenging. These are all of the considerations I have. I am looking for your guidance. Thank you!

Hey Shimon, thanks for reaching out. Between the three racks you're considering, I think the Benton Shift&Grins # B82FR is the best fit for what you're looking to do. The ability to convert it from a 2-bike rack to a 4-bike rack is a big advantage since it sounds like you'll often be carrying just two bikes. When you do need room for four, you can simply add the extension instead of hauling around a full-size rack all the time.

I know you mentioned the weight, and while the Benton is heavier than the Hollywood Destination, it's designed to break down into two sections, which makes removing it from the vehicle and storing it much more manageable. I also think it'll be easier to swap between your RAV4 and Lexus since you're not wrestling with one large, awkward piece. Another advantage is that it supports both wheel and frame mounting, giving you a little more flexibility if your bike lineup changes down the road.

The Curt # C18087 is a decent rack, but between the three, I think the Benton gives you the best balance of flexibility, stability, and durability. The Hollywood Destination # HR4000 is hard to beat on weight, but since it doesn't convert to a 2-bike configuration, you'd always be hauling and handling a full 4-bike rack, even when you only need to carry two bikes. Given everything you mentioned, I think the Benton checks the most boxes.

Jesse, Thank you so much! This is really helpful. We only have one bike right now but we plan to buy more. The bikes will be hybrid road/trail but not full-on mountain bikes. I can see us using two or three bikes quite often, and four less often. Shimon

@ShimonC Great! Glad to help. The Benton really is a solid rack for the price. I think you'll be happy with it. The ratcheting hooks can mount to the wheel or the frame, so fenders won't be a problem.

@JesseM just looking at this again and the weight difference between the Benton and the Curt racks. What pushes the Benton ahead for you over the Curt? The Curt is significantly lighter, which I assume also means each section is lighter when splitting it into 2 bikes plus the 2 bike ad on for 4 bikes. Thank. you!

@ShimonC That's a fair point, and you're right, the Curt is about 30 lbs lighter than the Benton. If weight is your top priority, the Curt definitely has the advantage and will be easier to lift on and off the vehicle. The reason I lean toward the Benton is because I think it has a more robust overall design. I like the wheel trays, the way the bikes are secured, and the overall fit and finish a little better. It's also designed to convert between a 2-bike and 4-bike configuration, just like the Curt, but I find it feels a bit more solid when fully loaded. That said, I don't think you'd be disappointed with either rack. If making the rack as easy as possible to remove and store is your biggest concern, I'd probably give the nod to the Curt. If long-term durability and stability matter more, I'd still lean toward the Benton. I actually purchased a new bike rack for my Camry recently and I was torn between a Curt hanging rack and a Thule. I ended up paying about 80$ more for the Thule for the same reason. I wanted something I knew would last long-term. Personally, I have never been super impressed with the Curt racks, but that's just me.
