Sway Control for 2022 Audi Q7 55 TFSI Towing 2014 Airstream 23CB

Question:

I have a 2022 Audi Q7 55 TSFI and want to tow an 2014 Airstream 23CB. The Airstream GVWR is 6,000 lbs. I had a Stealth SHR 30016 with a SHT 25010 installed but the goose neck was too low. Had another hitch ball installed with a welded sway bar but after one trip, the welded part broke off and the hitch bar was hard to remove. What combination of hitch/sway would you recommend? Audi does not recommend using a WDH. Is the sway bar necessary. I barely felt any sway when I drove.

Hi Isabelle! You don't have to have a sway bar/sway control unless you think you need it. Since you can't use a WDH, the best option is electronic sway control like the Curt True Course Advanced Bluetooth Trailer Sway Control # C94VV. This detects trailer sway and uses the brakes to correct it automatically.

Listen to the expert. Can’t imagine not having some kind of sway control. You don’t need it until you unexpectedly need it, and then …. Also sounds as if you are pushing the limits on weight with your tow vehicle. Have x5 for smaller rv and use the control. It is good to know it is there. One issue is that you can’t tell if is really working. Wish it came with an indicator more than a light on the controller. So, I test it on occasion to see if responding, Also is in line with the curt blue tooth brake controller with its own emergency braking button. Be safe. Oh, I too, had stealth hitch installed. You can get from etrailer a ball and extension that gets the ball up to the right level. Call them and get help on that. Make sure it is rated for the tongue weight you need + some for hard bounces, etc.

When looking at the specifications of your tow vehicle and rv I have a bit of concern. Audi does show your vehicle with a 7700 tow capacity. But I could not find information concerning maximum hitch weight. With your Airstream specs show it's dry hitch weight is 720lbs. Add a battery, full LP tanks and some extra cargo and you could push over 1000lb hitch weight without distribution which to me seems pretty heavy for the suv. As for the Curt electronic sway control my experience with it after pulling my bumper hitch trailer about 3500 miles after the install has been excellent. But I also use a weight distribution hitch with sway control. To me Audi rating the Q7 55 TSFI tow capacity at 7700 lbs is about like Ford rating F-150's at over 10,000 lbs is really pushing limits. Just my 2 cents.
