Can I Use the Curt Winch Mounting Plate with the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount?

Updated 06/12/2026 | Published 06/10/2026

Question:

Hello, I’m looking to add a winch to my aluminum open car trailer. Not wanting to permanently mount as trailer is stored outside. Just to have the ability to load a broken car if ever needed. I’m looking at Curt D210 ball mount and possibly mounting the Curt C31010 winch mount plate in the bike rack/cargo carrier receiver part, to mount the winch. Vehicle winched weight would be under 3500lbs. Would these items be suitable for this use? Thanks for listening, Happy Motoring, Lou

Hey Lou,

From what you're describing and the parts you're looking at, I'd say that it would work just fine for mounting a winch so you can load cars onto your trailer. The Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount part # C31010 is rated for 7,500lbs so it'll work for sedans and most SUVs. The accessory part of the ball mount does have a slight rise at 3 9/16" from the top of the shank, if you're needing more drop/rise, I suggest switching to an adjustable height hitch adapter like the Patriot Hitches 2" Adjustable Drop Hitch Receiver part # PH38PR. It has an 11-inch rise or drop, is made of carbon steel, and has a 7,000lb towing capacity. If your truck has a lift or if you're towing multiple trailers in addition to using your winch it would make it easy to adjust to whatever height you need to get your trailer level.

The Curt Trailer Hitch Electric Winch Mount Plate part # C31010 will fit perfectly into either ball mount's 2" hitch receiver and the shank has three adjustable mounting holes to work with different winch models. The roller fairlead mounting points have also been updated to work with newer roller fairleads.

What kind of cars do you plan on loading with this set up?
