Hi Andrew, great question!
No, if you're running the Cummins Onan P5000iDF on gasoline part # CM58MR, you won't need a high altitude kit when driving from Missouri to Colorado. The generator uses an EFI engine that automatically adjusts as elevation changes, so you can head into the mountains without having to make any engine adjustments along the way.
As you climb higher, the air gets thinner. Older carbureted generators don't adjust for that change on their own, which is why some require a high altitude kit. The Onan's EFI system handles those adjustments automatically, helping it run smoothly whether you're at home in Missouri or camping in the Colorado mountains.
If you plan to run the generator on propane, Cummins Onan does recommend using the High Altitude Propane Regulator Kit, part A073Z778, for operation above 2,000 feet. We currently do not carry this kit. It is specifically designed for the P4500iDF and P5000iDF dual-fuel inverter generators and helps maintain proper performance when operating on propane at higher elevations.
The only thing to keep in mind is that all generators lose some power at higher elevations because there's less oxygen available. The engine will continue to run properly, but you may notice a reduction in available power if you're running larger loads at very high elevations. For most RV setups, though, it's not something owners typically have to worry about.
Will you mainly be powering your RV, or do you have some other equipment you'll be running as well?
