Replacement Drum Surge Brake Actuator for a TDE Model LP7000

Updated 06/09/2026 | Published 06/08/2026

Question:

I have a 2008 Four Winns boat trailer. It has a TDE Model LP7000 drum brake surge activator. The only real problem I have is that the slide latch keeps releasing while towing. Do you sell replacement slide latches? Assuming i can drill out the old slide and nylon nut on the replacement. If not, do you have a replacement recommendation for the actuator? The tongue of the trailer is 3.5 inches by 4.5. Currently the actuator slides into the tongue but it looks like it is not carried any longer. I see you recommend a bolt on but I only see one that fits a 3 inch tongue. See photo

Thanks for the pics and all the information Ellsworth. Unfortunately, we do not have a replacement latch for the discontinued TDE Model LP7000.

As far as a actuator replacement goes, that's going to require some modifications of your tongue. There's no replacement actuator that's going to slide into the hollow space your TDE Model LP7000 sits in. What you'll need to do is cut off your tongue and weld on a standard size 3" trailer tongue. I know this is not ideal but there's no other option with the lack of replacement parts.

Once you modify your tongue you can install the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Surge Brake Actuator item # DX83FR. This is a bolt on drum brake actuator that is going to install and sit flush with a 3" wide trailer tongue. It'll be the closest comparable height and capacity setup to what you have now. It fits a 2" coupler and has a 7,500 lbs capacity.

The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 item # DX83FR comes with a manual lockout key. It looks like you're currently setup with a 4-way connector so this won't require you adding a 5-way for an electric lockout like item # T4748800 or require you to use free backing brakes.

What model Four Winns boat do you have?
