What are Recess Dimensions that B&W Companion Flatbed Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Hitch Adapter Fits

Updated 05/30/2026 | Published 05/25/2026

Question:

Working with a flatbed truck, with a 14x14 recessed well. Roughly 5” deep from the deck to the bottom of the well. Trying to understand what adjustability this product has to accommodate the depth of the well. I see notes about 18x18 and 4” but nothing that suggests a range. Customer photos suggest this is expecting the BandW socket to be flush with the deck not in a well? Thank you

Hey Kenneth, the B&W Companion Flatbed Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3050 that you referenced requires a minimum recessed box dimension of 18 inch by 18 inch and has a max recessed box depth of 4 inches. What are the dimensions of your recessed area?

In my case it's a Norstar bed, with a 14"x14"x6" deep well for the goose ball. Currently configured with a fixed ball. Thought process is to replace the ball with a B&W socket; but not sure that actually addresses the problem of putting a removable 5th wheel hitch on this truck. The base of the companion would need to sit on the deck, and reach down 6" to the top of the socket. Which is the basis of the question since all the photos suggest that the socket is typically flush to the deck.

@KennethF We built a custom flat bed when we purchased our 2021 f-550 with the 15K GCW option. Had planned on a gooseneck setup, But had to get it out working. We purchased an RV which in 2025 which then needed a 5 th wheel and still wanted a Gooseneck ball towing option. Used the B&W weld in Kit with a 1/2" steel plate, tied into the rails of the flat bed with some 2"x 3" bracing below the plate. To answer the question we have a 2x8 treated would deck sitting on2x2 angle cross pieces for support the wood. The ball socket actually sits in a 4" well below the top of the wood deck. We purchased the B&W companion fifth wheel with the singlke point ball adapter and switch between Rv and Gooseneck. I made a 1/8" plate and a frame to go around the wood deck opening and lift it out when towing, gives us full bed space when using bed. The 4" drop should not hurt as most Goosenecks are adjustable as well as 5th. Wheels. I was really concerned that the new RV wouldn't tow correctly. The whole set up works Great. Been using it for a year now. sorry to be windy.
