Question:

If hauling a single bike, can it be loaded in the outer position furthest away from vehicle? My wife wants to load her bike but it will be much easier if it she can lift it for that outer position. I know there is a separate ramp that can be purchased, but just wondering without using that.

Hey Brandon, this is a good question.

Ideally when loading a single bike onto the Kuat Piston Pro # KU76ZR (or really any bike carrier), you'll want to use the inner most position on the rack. This is simply to create less leverage on the carrier. Just think of holding a weight in the palm of your hand versus on your finger tips.

That being said, I absolutely understand the cumbersome nature of having to fight the bike through the outer cradles and back into the inner position on the carrier. Is the carrier going to fall apart if your wife chooses to use the outer position instead? Absolutely not. If it's the difference between staying home and enjoying a beautiful day on the trails, use the rack's outer position for the bike.

The potential issue is likely to be more long term, as it's just going to create more bounce and movement on the rack during travel, which can lead to premature wear. So if it all possible I do recommend using the inner position.

The other option like you already mentioned is to add the Ramp # KU63VR so it's easier to load the bike regardless of which wheel mounts you use.
