How Low Should A Hitch Receiver Be To Safely Use It With A Cargo Carrier?
Updated 05/29/2026 | Published 05/22/2026 >
Question:
What is the lowest hitch receiver height you would recommend using this carrier with? The retractable hitch receiver in my VW I.D. Buzz is below the bumper, and I worry this my scrape on hills or dips.

Hey Kyle, thanks for reaching out, and good question. There’s not really a hard set “minimum height” for running a cargo carrier like the # FHG49ZR because a lot of it comes down to where and how you drive. Around here in Missouri where the roads are pretty flat and gradual, you can get away with a much lower hitch setup than you could somewhere like San Francisco where you’ve got steep driveways, sharp transitions, and crazy hills everywhere. The ID. Buzz receiver definitely sits on the lower side though, so your concern is still completely reasonable.
In the real world, once you start getting down around 12" or less from the ground to the bottom of the carrier shank, that’s usually where people start scraping on dips and steep entrances. The good news is a lot of carriers have some rise built into the shank already, so the platform itself sits higher than the receiver tube. I’d pay more attention to the departure angle and how far the carrier sticks out behind the van than just the raw hitch height number, because that extra length is what really gets you into trouble on hills and dips.
Do you usually drive on a lot of steep roads or driveways?

We had no issues with the carrier dragging. We have a 2023 rogue with the trailer receiver bottom being 13” from the ground. I have pictures if you wiyld like.

I mount this carrier to the back of my 2022 ProMaster campervan. It comes straight out of the hitch at approximately 13 inches above the ground surface to the bottom of the hitch mount. It is below the bumper like your VW, and I have had no problems driving on dirt roads where bumps are common. I am sure you wouldn't have any problems on paved roads. However, if you are concerned about the low height, you can always use an hitch adapter to raise the mount an inch or two higher.

Unlike the others, it doesnt drop from the receiver height, it comes straight out. It does come out pretty far. You could probably shorten this.
