Using a 2-Inch Hitch Bike Carrier on a 1-1/4-Inch Class I Hitch on 2014 Nissan Rogue

Updated 07/16/2014 | Published 07/13/2014

Question:

I have a 2014 Nissan Rouge, and it came with a class I, 1-1/4inch receiver opening from the dealer. I own a Thule Expressway 995/996 bike carrier that uses a 2inch receiver opening. Can I use an adapter and an anti-rattle pin to make this work? If so, what do you recommend? Thanks.

A light-duty Class I hitch such as the dealer-installed unit on your Rogue has a limitation of 2-bike capacity, regardless of the rack's actual capacity. A hitch adapter like the Brophy #HTAD that you referenced will not allow you to safely use your 2-inch bike rack in your 1-1/4-inch hitch because all adapters like this have the unavoidable side-effect of cutting hitch capacity in HALF. So, your 200-lb-rated Class I hitch would have only a 100-lb tongue weight capacity if used with an adapter.

This particular adapter won't fit a Class I hitch in any case.

A better option is a Class I-rated 2-bike carrier that will directly fit your hitch receiver. This will avoid the need for an adapter and not cause loss of hitch capacity. The link provided will let you see all 2-bike Class I bike racks. You can use the filters in the left-hand margin to narrow results based on your preferences.

The linked article will help you consider your options and enable you to select a rack that will fit your Rogue. A great example of an advanced platform carrier is the Thule EasyFold # TH903202 which is shown on the linked video. This carrier fits both hitch sizes, most frame types, includes locks, tilts, folds and even has a loading ramp for your bikes.
