Recommended Hub Assembly for a Boat Trailer in Freshwater Situations

Updated 05/30/2026 | Published 05/20/2026

Question:

For boat trailers used in freshwater situations only, should a Marine grade hub be used? If that is not necessary, how long would you expect a non-marine grade hub to last before rushing/corroding?

Hey Bob, really good question my friend.

In freshwater situations, a standard hub can last several years before rust becomes a concern but I'd advise marine grade 99% of the time if the trailer will contact water often.

Marine grade hubs offer additional corrosion resistance and better protection against moisture. The cost difference is usually small compared to the convenience and peace of mind they provide.

What style of boat do you launch in freshwater?

@BobM ok cool, I'd still recommend going with marine grade over standard. Appreciate you choosing etrailer and let me know if you have any questions in the future!
