Replacement AC System With Modern Refrigerant For 30 Amp Travel Trailer

Published 05/13/2026

Question:

I have a 30 amp travel trailer and I don’t really want to move up to a 15K AC if I don’t need to. I’m replacing an older 13.5K unit that cooled fine before it died. Is GE44FR a good direction since it has the modern r32?

Good morning Malcolm, yes the GE Appliances HE # GE44FR is a good direction if your old 13,500 Btu unit was keeping up fine. It keeps you in that same cooling range instead of jumping to a larger 15K unit, and it’s GE’s high-efficiency 13.5K rooftop model rated for a 15-amp circuit breaker.

The # GE44FR is the rooftop AC unit only, so you’ll want the matching GE install kit with it. For a ducted RV with ceiling vents, use # GE56FR. For a ductless setup where the air blows from the ceiling assembly right under the AC, use # GE46FR.

Since this is newer R32 equipment, your RV will have a nice modern setup so you won't have to worry about parts not being available in future years. Was your old AC tied into ceiling ducts, Malcolm, or was it a direct-discharge setup?
