Efficient 13,500 BTU RV AC System For RV That Camps In Mild Weather

Published 05/12/2026

Question:

My RV has a 15K AC now that just broke, but we rarely camp in extreme heat and I’d like something a little more efficient if I’m replacing the whole setup. Would the GE 13.5K high-efficiency unit be a mistake?

Hey Pavel! No, the GE Appliances HE # GE44FR would not be a mistake if your current 15K AC feels like more than you really need. It’s a 13,500 Btu high-efficiency rooftop unit and is rated for a 15-amp circuit breaker, so it’s a good fit when you want a more modest cooling setup.

Since # GE44FR is the rooftop AC unit only, you’ll need the matching GE install kit to complete it: # GE56FR for ducted RVs or # GE46FR for ductless RVs. If your current 15K barely kept up, I’d stay with 15K but if it cooled easily, stepping down to 13.5K can make sense. Is your RV ducted through ceiling vents, Pavel?
