Question:

Will this the dc to dc charger the charge the chassis’s battery on a class A motor home when connected to 120 volt shore power and engine off?

Hey David, thanks for reaching out. No, that Victron Orion XS RV Converter # VN93VR isn’t going to do what you’re thinking in that situation. It’s built to take power from one 12V source, usually your alternator while the engine is running, and charge another battery bank. With the engine off and plugged into shore power, there’s no DC source feeding it in the right direction, so it’s not going to charge your chassis battery.

In a Class A, shore power is handled by your converter, and that typically only charges the house batteries. If you want to keep the chassis battery topped off while plugged in, you’re looking at something like a battery maintainer or combiner system that’s designed for that job. The Orion is great for charging while driving, but it’s not meant to backfeed and maintain the chassis battery from shore power.

Thank you so much. I will look into a maintainer. Do you have any recommendation that will connect to the Victron app?

@DavidE Yes Victron does have a Bluetooth battery maintainer. Take a look at the following: - Victron Blue Smart Battery Charger with Bluetooth - IP65 Protection - 12V - 15 Amp # VN57RR
