2026 Outback Wiring Harness Compatibility

Updated 04/30/2026 | Published 04/21/2026

Question:

I have a 2026 Subaru Outback Premium, and got a splice-in wiring harness. However, I found a wiring block under the scuff panel on the drivers side which looks just like the 2025 models then on the psgr side. Would the plug and play harness from the 2025 model work instead of all the splicing, and if not, why not. Thanks for your expert opinion!

Hi Joseph!

Since Curt has confirmed the 2025 plug-and-play harness hasn’t been tested on the 2026 Outback yet, I wouldn’t count on it being a safe swap even if that connector looks identical. Subaru can change pin functions, add or remove circuits, or leave ports inactive between model years, so without verification there’s a real risk it either won’t work correctly or could cause electrical issues. At this point, sticking with the splice-in harness you have is the most reliable option until a confirmed plug-and-play fit is released for the 2026.

That said, the connector you found is definitely interesting and could point toward future compatibility, especially since Subaru has used similar layouts before. It just hasn’t been proven yet for trailer wiring use on your model year, which is why manufacturers haven’t released a confirmed harness for it.

If you’re up for it, would you mind sending a photo of that plug you found? That could help us take a closer look and see how it compares to the known 2025 setup.

Thanks. It's quite different from the 2025 harness connector. Set up for 7-pin, per Subaru. Can't add a photo, but it's on the driver's side just under the rear bumper lip.

It sounds like Subaru did change things up for 2026, especially if that connector is already set up for a 7-way at the rear. Unfortunately, we don’t have a confirmed aftermarket plug-and-play harness for that setup yet, so there isn’t a tested option we can confidently point you to right now. In cases like this, the safest route is still using a confirmed-fit splice-in harness until manufacturers release something specific for the 2026 model

@JosephB the Curt connector worked perfectly on my 2021 forester. I would wait until they have a tested connector for your 2026.

I used the pigtail from etrailer and it work great. No hassle at all. I highly recommend their products.

@JuanA Thank you so much, what a great shout out! But honestly we couldn't do it without you! What kind of trailer are you pulling nowadays?

I WOULD DO THIS. I WOULD PLUG INTO THE FACTORY BLOCK IF THE CONNECTOR were THE SAME. THEN USE A TRAILER PLUG TESTER THAT SHOWS TURN SIGNAL LEFT AND RIGHT, BRAKE AND DRIVING. many manufacturers use a same wiring harness across plat forms to cut down on overall parts components to manufacture and make a lot of modular engineering choices so across a whole line of vehicles many components are the same and do the same thing. Also, use a voltage checker to make sure the feed voltage is correct and also make sure the ground is into a real ground as part of vehicle. Give this a try and you may be surprised. i have had 3 Subarus and have put hitches and wiring on each using the factory plug. also look in owner's manual and fuse block diagram to see that it was set up for hitch as this is a dealer installed option
