How to Charge a Brakeaway Battery When Trailer is in Storage

Updated 04/15/2026 | Published 04/09/2026

Question:

Hi, We have an Aluma utility trailer with a Brightway Breakaway kit. Part Number: 3802308 in your product listings. It does not get used frequently enough to maintain the battery through the tow vehicle. Have you got anything in the way of maintainers that would work with this system. Battery has small tabs for slide-on crimp connectors. Thanks.

Hey, Gordon. Thanks for reaching out.

Yes, we do have a couple of good options to help keep your breakaway battery maintained during storage.

If you have access to an outlet, the best option would be the NOCO Genius Smart Battery Charger - 1 Amp # 329-GENIUS1. It will automatically keep the battery charged without overcharging, and you can leave it connected without having to worry about it.

To make things even easier, I’d also recommend the X-Connect Eyelet Terminals # 329-GC002. You can leave those attached to the battery and just plug the charger in whenever you need it.

If you don’t have access to power, there is also a solar option. The Performance Tool 2.5-Watt Solar Charger # PTW2997 can help maintain the battery when the trailer is stored outside. Just keep in mind it’s a lower output, so will work best if the battery is already fully charged, it will help maintain that full charge but will take several days

How are you usually storing your trailer when you're not using it?
