Why Won’t the Lock Stay Engaged on My Stealth Hitches Hidden Rack Receiver?

Updated 04/13/2026 | Published 04/07/2026

Question:

I bought the stealth hitch system for my 2021 Hyundai Pallisade. I really like it but this year when I pulled the rubber cover off the locking mechanism, the lock wont stay in so I cant lock the trailer hitch on. Do you have any suggestions for me? I tried pushing the hitch on/off many times and I tried using the key to lock/unlock it. Thanks for any help you can provide. Mark

Hello Mark,

It sounds like the locking mechanism on your Stealth Hitches Hidden Rack Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" # 391HYUNPALIS19 isn’t fully engaging, which is why the lock won’t stay in place. When everything is working correctly, you should feel a solid “click” and the lock will stay secure, so this is usually a sign that the internal latch just needs to be freed up or realigned.

The most common cause is the receiver not being fully seated or the latch not lining up perfectly. Try inserting the receiver firmly while pushing inward and slightly upward, then turn the key to lock it. A small amount of side-to-side movement can help the latch line up so it can fully engage.

If that doesn’t do it, the next step is to clean and free up the mechanism. Spray a penetrating lubricant like WD-40 into both the key cylinder and the latch opening, then cycle the key several times. After that, check the internal locking pin. If you can access it, make sure it moves freely and springs back when pressed. If it feels stuck, working it back and forth along with more lubricant usually gets it moving again.

Once you’ve cleaned and confirmed the pin is moving, try reinstalling the receiver and locking it again. You should feel that solid click when it seats correctly. If you still can’t get it to engage, the lock cylinder itself may be worn and could need replacement.

Before using it again, make sure the lock is fully engaging since this system relies on that mechanism to keep the receiver secured. Are you mainly using the hitch for towing or for a bike rack or cargo carrier? That will help narrow down anything else that could be affecting how it is seating.
