Parts Needed to Install a Autowbrake and 7-Way for Towing w/a 2022 Toyota RAV-4 Hybrid

Updated 04/13/2026 | Published 04/04/2026

Question:

Hello, I am looking to install trailer brakes on my 1978 13 Scamp ~1200 lbs fully loaded towing vehicle is a 2022 Rav-4 hybrid. From what Ive read, the Autowbrake is a good option because rewiring a Rav-4 hybrid for a 7 pin system can be tricky and perhaps hard to find someone to do that work, as Im no expert in electric configurations. I have two questions: 1. We have a lippert axle, model no. V000629363. What brakes would be compatible with this? 2. Assuming I were to purchase the Autowbrake and the brakes, are there any other parts that Id need to buy? Thank you!

Hey Daniel, thanks for the part number. You'll still need to install a 7-way connector on your 2022 Toyota RAV-4 hybrid to power the Autowbrake Electric Brake Controller item # 3430001. The 4-Way like item # C59236 that fits your RAV-4 does not supply power.

To add a 7-way, I recommend the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit item # ETBC7L. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your RAV-4 with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an already existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it. The only wiring you'll need to do is to run a 12v wire directly to your RAV-4's battery.

I spoke with Lippert and we have quite a few options for adding braking hubs to your Scamp. Since your trailer is older, I'll need you to take a measurement of the lug nut pattern so I can identify the correct hubs you'll need. Without this information you run the risk of having to replace your wheels too.

I have linked an FAQ below that'll show you how to measure them.

Does your RAV-4 have a 4-way connector?

You can add this information, along with any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.

Here are some other parts you'll need to add brakes to your Scamp:

etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector item # e99011

12 Gauge 2 Conductor Jacketed (Brake) Wire Per Foot item # 12-2-1

The integrated brake system failed on my truck. Factory could not repair and no one makes a controller to fit. I installed this system myself and I am very happy with it. works great. Follow install instruction and set up. Dave P,S, I called the factory with a couple of questions and they were very informative.

Hi Daniel I installed the Autobrake on my off-road camping trailer along with a brake away kit. Both work flawlessly and were fairly easy to install. On numerous critical occasions the Autobrake worked well. Would highly recommend the Autobrake and break away kit for added peace of mind!

Jerred, thank you very much for this information. To answer your questions, the lug pattern is 5 on 4-1/2. And yes, the Rav-4 currently has a 4 way connector.

@Daniel You're welcome! Since your trailer has a 5 on 4-1/2 lug nut pattern. You'll want the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly item # 8-257-5UC3 and the Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes item # 23-47-48. The hubs are sold individually so you will need two of those.
