Question:

My 2017 Ford F150 does not have a 12 V outlet in the bed and I want to install one but I do not know how. Do you have any kits that would help me? I need the plug in a 12 V cooler/freezer for camping trips. I have found a mechanic business in my area that would do it for me so if you have a complete set up I would love to know about it. Thank you so much!

Hi Ada!

To add a 12V outlet to the truck bed of your 2017 Ford F150, I recommend using the Roadmaster 12V Outlet Kit part # RM-9332. The wires for this kit will need to be extended so they can reach the battery, you can use 12-gauge wire part # 12-1-1 to extend the harness. You will also need some butt connectors part # 05732-2 and a 12 gauge Fuse Holder part # SWC9539 to help connect the wires and attach the fuse to the battery terminal.

Once you obtain all of these parts you will want to mount the 12-volt power outlet in the rear of your truck bed. After you have mounted the accessory outlet, you can ground the ground wire to a clean bare metal surface. Once the ground is connected you will need to use the butt connector to extend the power wire from the end of the outlet all the way up to the vehicle's battery. You can then use the other butt connector to attach to the fuse holder and a ring terminal to attach the fuse holder to the positive battery terminal. The fuse will need to be about 6" from the battery to work properly.

Make sure not to splice additional wire between the spade terminal and the fuse holder as the fuse holder must be within a few inches of the electrical connection to make it secure. I've also linked an installation video on a 2021 Ford F150 for reference when doing your install.

@Ada I used mine for a Patriot brake system and installed at the drivers feet to plug it in for my blue ox tow. I have had to issues so far (about 6 months) As for you, the battery install will be similar. It is easy with little battery knowledge. Just make sure you have a long enough power wire to reach that far. Also, it will be a constant draw from the battery while plugged in. Keep that in mind if the truck is off and for corrosion at the connection point. Good luck!!!

@Brian thank you for the input, I am no mechanic by any means but this seems like something I can do. I just have probably a very ignorant question, don’t I need some kind of inverter or something for the connection to the battery or is that what the fuse does? I appreciate the help, thank you again

I used the 12v outlet kit to mount under the dash of our 2014 Honda CRV to power the supplemental brake system when towing the car behind our motorhome. It works great, no issues.
