How to Securely Strap Down a Boat That Extends Past the Rear of the Trailer

Updated 03/17/2026 | Published 03/15/2026

Question:

I have a 17 whaler and the trailer is recessed. I dont seem to have anywhere to strap down the stern using the two stern loops on the transom. Any ideas of how i could come up with a solution to my problem?

Hey, Chad. Thanks for reaching out.

I’d be happy to help figure out a good solution for you. I just need a little more information about your setup first.

- About how far does the back of your boat extend past the end of the trailer?
- How long are the straps you're currently using?
- Could you reply to the email with a couple pictures of the back of the boat and the trailer?

Once I can see exactly what you’re working with, I’ll be able to look into some good options to get everything secured properly.

When's your first trip with the boat?

I've had 15+ boats over the past 50yrs. I started using the retractable stern straps a year ago. They are well made and I wish I had them 50yrs ago. No more looking for straps and having to adjust them.
