Transporting Scooter On Back Of 2006 Toyota Avalon With 1-1/4" Receiver

Updated 03/11/2026 | Published 03/07/2026

Question:

Good afternoon, I have a quick question. I have an 06 toyota avalon that is my moms car. She is wheel chair using and getting a electric scooter to be able to get around. I am looking for a Class 2 or higher hitch for this car, since she does not want to purchase a newer car. I have been looking and only see class 1, and needing class 2 or higher for tongue weight of holding ramp piece and scooter. Is there a way to build a higher class 2 for this vehicle? Wife and I are looking for something and only finding class 1. Thank you for you time.

Hey Brian, I may have a solution for you, but unfortunately there are not any 2" receivers for a 2006 Toyota Avalon, as most sedans are not rated high enough to be able to handle a larger 2" cargo carrier like you are wanting.

I'd double check your owner's manual, but it looks like your car has a 200lb tongue weight rating on the 1-1/4" hitch. In that case, you could install the 19x47 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hithes # C18110 you were looking at, as long as the scooter will fit and you will be under the weight rating of your vehicle and hitch. If you don't have a hitch at all then you can use Curt # C11427.

The cargo carrier weighs 30lbs so you'll have another 170lbs that can be added, so hopefully the scooter is under that weight. Let me know if you can get some more info and I can help you out a bit more if need be. What type of scooter is it? The only one we have with a ramp is for 2" receives so hopefully the scooter is light enough to lift. It's unfortunately really difficult to transport scooters / wheelchairs on cars with the smaller hitch size.

Brian, Honestly i’d be surprised if a scooter would fit on this carrier. You’d definitely want to make sure it was under the #170 lb limit too. While the carrier is built well I wouldn’t want you to look in mirror and see scooter sliding down the highway. Might have better luck with tiny trailer

@SteveD Good input and I agree. Unfortunately I don't think his car is rated to tow :(
