Is There A Way To Carry 2" Accessories In A 1-1/4" Hitch?

Updated 03/05/2026 | Published 03/03/2026

Question:

Hi am looking for a hitch to bolt onto my 2004 Toyota Camry. I see they only make a 1” 1/4 for it. Is there an adapter to make it a 2”? I have a hitch carrier I want to use but it’s 2” size

Hi Randen!

There are adapters that will take the 1-1/4" hitch # C12339 up to a 2", but I typically don't recommend them. If you look at the etrailer Trailer Hitch Adapter - 1-1/4" to 2" Hitch - 4-1/2" Drop/5" Rise - 6-1/2" L # e93YR and # e43YR, they will do what you are wanting to do. However, when they (or any adapter like it) are used, they reduce your tongue weight capacity by 50%.

The # C12339 technically has 300 pounds of tongue weight capacity, but when using one of these adapters, that will become 150 pounds of capacity. And that is just the hitch. From what I could find, your 2004 Toyota Camry is rated up to 200 pounds of tongue weight capacity. This means that if you use one of these kinds of adapters, you will have 100 pounds of tongue weight capacity. You are always limited by the lowest rated component, and in this case, that is your vehicle.

With all that said, if your carrier and cargo is 100 pounds or less combined, then you are good to go. You will need a pin/clip to hold the adapter in place (like the # F-4) and I highly recommend using anti-rattle devices to keep everything from moving. The Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061-125 for the 1-1/4" side and # RM-061 for the 2" side would be the ones I would use. They are a little pricy, but they are extremely good at what they do.

On that note, what are you wanting to carry?
