Can 2026 Chevy Silverado Short Bed Tow Fifth Wheel Hitch With Gooseneck Adapter Montana High Country

Updated 03/12/2026 | Published 02/28/2026

Question:

I am new to 5th wheel towing and have to get a hitch. I have a 2026 Chevrolet 3500 with the short 6’8” box and OEM puck system. The RV is a Montana High Country 295RL that has the Max Turn front cap. I too do not want to deal with a heavy hitch and was looking at the GenY gooseneck pin box. Do I need an offset gooseneck ball? Will the GenY hitch work with my truck and RV? Thanks, Bill

Hey Bill, welcome to the RV 5th wheel towing! So I agree with your line of thinking and I would want to go with a fifth wheel gooseneck adapter instead so that you never have to mess with a heavy fifth wheel hitch. The good news is that you can do this since you have a max turn cap on your Montana which gives turning clearance. The correct Gen-Y adapter would be the part # GY48FR which is correct for the 1116 style pin box your Montana High Country 295RL.

If you are open to it I would still recommend going with the offset hitch ball part # C68ZV as this will help even more with turning clearance.

Jameson thanks for the information. My only concern with the GenY pin box is that if I have a frame issue with the trailer Lippert may not warranty it. I also have been looking at the PullRite OEX Super Lite, I would not have to change the pin box on the trailer if I go that route and it isn’t that heavy.

@Bill Yeah that's a totally valid concern about the Gen-Y. If it was me though...I would probably hold onto the stock pin box in case something were to happen warranty wise and consider putting it back on the trailer in that situation...but that's just me haha. The Pullrite OEX hitch part # PUL96ZR that you mentioned as well wouldn't be a bad option either. It weighs 78 lb which is considerably lighter than most fifth wheel hitches.
