Looking For Manual Winch And Mounting Plate For 2022 Rockwood Freedom 1940

Updated 03/04/2026 | Published 02/06/2026

Question:

Hello, I have a used 2022 Rockwood Freedom 1940 and winch is mounted to a steel plate behind the trailer tongue jack. That steel plate is supposed to be angled upwards, but apparently that winch was overcranked and the steel plate is bent downwards almost flush with the top of the trailer tongue. I want to cut/grind the old mounting plate and install a new one. Do you have any idea where I can find a replacement mounting plate for a new winch? I also want to install a manual-crank winch in place of the older electric one, so a suggestion for a manual winch would be welcomed as well. Thank you.

Hey Dan, welcome back! After looking through the available options, I’m not seeing a direct replacement for the angled winch mounting plate that came on your Rockwood Freedom 1940. Once those plates get bent from overcranking, replacement usually isn’t an off-the-shelf item. The closest thing we have is the Dutton-Lainson Right-Angle Mounting Bracket # DL24110, but that’s a 90-degree mount, not angled like your original. Because of that, most folks end up having a local fab shop make a simple angled plate once the old one is cut off.

If you’re switching to a manual winch, a solid option is the Fulton XLT 2-Speed Trailer Winch # F142418. It’s enclosed, holds up well on trailer tongues, and has plenty of capacity for lifting a pop-up roof. Just make sure there’s enough clearance for the sidewind handle so it can rotate freely once mounted.

Hey Dan, how did things go with replacing that bent winch plate on your Rockwood Freedom? Did the local fab shop route work out, or did you end up using the Dutton-Lainson bracket instead? Your update could make it easier for others facing the same repair.

@JesseM Thanks for checking on my progress. I'm still in the process of working through the repair. After I cut-off the mounting plate, a local welding shop was able to straighten it out considerably using their shop press (and no shortage of experience). The next step is to tow the camper to the shop and see if the straightened plate can be welded into place. The Dutton-Lainson bracket would not have worked by itself in my case because I still needed to have something in place to which that bracket could mount and provide the right clearance and angle.

@DanO Hey Dan, thanks for the update! Glad to hear you found an experienced shop that was able to straighten out the plate. Hopefully they can get it welded without too much trouble and you can get your winch setup back up and running. You know where to find me if there is anything else I can do to help!
