Should Hydraulic Trailer Brakes Lines Have Fittings that Can Swivel or Turn

Updated 07/20/2026 | Published 01/21/2026

Question:

I have a boat trailer that I replaced the brake actuator with the 7500 lb drum brake dexter actuator. The brake line to the drums are pre-existing. I cant connect the line to the actuator because neither the line or actuator have a swivel connector/union. The line binds before I can get it tightened to the actuator. Does someone make an adapter or union that swivels that would allow me to connect the line to the actuator?

Hey Rob, the brake line on your trailer should have a male fitting that can spin freely on the rest of the brake line. Is yours a flexible brake line? Is it possible that the fitting is frozen to the line somehow and not letting it spin like it normally would?

Normally a flexible line like the part # DE56GR is used and the fittings can freely turn.

Hey Rob, did you find out if the fitting on your brake line was frozen or if you ended up switching to a flexible line like the one mentioned? Knowing what worked could help others dealing with the same brake connection issue.

I have the very same issue. I replaced the surge coupler and now just need to reconnect the brake line to the master cylinder and I can’t do it without twisting the flexible hose. My flex hose doesn’t swivel free of the nut. I’m also trying to find some sort of Union that would bring the two pieces together.

@Jared about how long of a flexible hose do you need?
