Either way is going to work Dave. You can install the Caliber Marine Slides item # CA76AJ directly to the wood or install them over carpet. This kit comes with ten slides that are 3" wide x 15" long and plenty of water use rated screws to securely attach them to your wood bunks.
What kind of boat do you have?

I added these slides over the bunk carpeting. I have a 25’ WorldCat 250. The boat rests on the slides the full length of the bunks. I have 2 bunks in a b shape for each side of the boat. So I bought a lot more because of that. If you have new bunks, or old or no carpeting, you can put these right on the wood, if you like. As long as you have the slides under the hull, I see no harm putting them on bunks without carpeting.
