Replacement Key Fob Powertrax Retractable Tonneau Covers Keeps Draining Batteries

Updated 01/14/2026 | Published 01/10/2026

Question:

I have 2 key fobs that have the same problem. They both drained batteries while not in use. The batteries would only last about a month. All the functions worked ok. Has anyone ever come across this problem? Are the key fobs bad?

Hey Mark. That's super frustrating. I've got a Firestick remote that does the same thing. How far are you keeping your key fob like item # RTX36TR away from your truck? If it's within the range of the cover, 30ish feet, it'll constantly communicate and drain the battery.

Also what kind of cover do you have?

One of my key fobs was broken. The other would work but would drain the battery in a matter of 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes quicker. I replaced it with a key fob from this site and I have had no more problems.

I'm not sure what model cover I have. I think it is a Retrax MX serial number 18030165977001. I stored remote inside vehicle when not in use. I also stored them inside house when not in use as well. Even further, I tried unplugging power to the receiver to see if batteries on the fobs will stop draining but that did not seems to help.

@MarkN Thanks for the information! Your Retrax 18030165977001 is definitely compatible with the Replacement Key Fob item # RTX36TR. Based on what you've already done to stop the batteries from dying, I do recommend replacing the key fob.
