Can I add Lights To My Open Stock Trailer Without Adding in an Additional Battery

Updated 12/31/2025 | Published 12/23/2025

Question:

Hello! We have a 1994 open stock trailer which we regularly camp with. I would like to add interior lights and exterior flood lights. I’d like to be able to add a switch to turn these on separately from my running lights. The trailer has a 7 way plug. Should I add a deep cycle battery to power the lights? Or can I wire them to the existing battery box? I’m assuming the trailer has a hot wire that connects to the truck, but I’m 100 on how to check this. Thanks!

Hey, Ashley!

If it's an auxiliary battery on your trailer you can totally wire the lights into the battery. Now if you should add an additional battery all depends on how much power you are needing over all. Do you run into any issues of running low on power with your current battery you have? If not you wont have any issues with adding in some lights.

Were there any specific lights you were looking at? We do carry quite a number of options like part # OPT64FR and part # 3371492196 for flood lights that you could easily wire up to switch part # 37212525.
