A shade that won't stay down isn't just a small thing; it messes with your mornings. You're barely awake, coffee in hand, when the sun aggressively finds your eyes through the window with that broken shade. It's too bright, too soon, and all you want is to enjoy your caffeine as you slowly finish waking up. This kit restores the tension inside your shade so it glides smoothly and stays where you set it. Once it's fixed, the light softens and your RV feels peaceful again, just how you want your mornings to start.
Small kits in the 1700 Series are made for RV shades between 20" and 36" wide. If you're close to the upper end of a mini size, it won't hurt to go up a size. The only limit is the spring size and whether it fits inside your shade's roller tube. So before you order, check the spring inside your shade. If the internal diameter measures 17 mm, this is the right family of kit. With a standard tape measure, that's about 11/16" and roughly the size of a dime. If it measures closer to 1-1/8" (a little bigger than a quarter), you'll need one of the 28 mm spring kits instead.
Nothing stops a repair faster than missing hardware. This kit includes the spring, clips, brackets, screws, and endcaps, so you can fix the problem in one go and get your shade working like new. And all you need is 3 tools: a pair of pliers, a 1/8" Allen wrench, and a flat-head screwdriver.

Hi everyone, Steve here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at our MCD Innovations RV Shade Repair Kit. Now folks, this is perfect for smaller windows. This kit is gonna let you move your shade by hand, and it does come with the brackets and everything you see before me included. This is a 17 millimeter mini springing kit. It's designed for one small RV window shade.
And again, that internal diameter of that spring is 17 millimeters. So make sure you're measuring to match up yours to be sure you're getting the right one as we do carry many different sizes of these. As far as some overall measurements to kind of help you. From end to end here, I got roughly 11 3/8" long on the longer side. And on this little bitty short guy here, I got about 3 5/8".
And then you do get the clips, the retainer, the little set screws. Then you're gonna get four left-hand and four right-hand, two black, two beige, on each of these endcaps here for placing in the end and everything to cover everything up from the side. So again, nice little kit. Probably a good idea is just to have one maybe on hand. That way if you're out in the road and something happens, you don't have to worry about running and trying to find something like this.

The spring fit perfectly. And it works fine. The YouTube instructions by etrailer and MCD were helpful and etrailer contacts were very knowledgeable. It is hard to believe that it costs as much as it does but welcome to the new inflation adjusted economy. Etrailer has a unique package tracking program that uses a map - very nice.
Everything was as described. Quality OEM product.

I had to order an entire repair kit just to get the spring assembly, now I have a bunch of extra parts that I may never use. It almost seems like I'm forced to pay additional $$$ just so that I can repair a malfunctioning shade.

I’ve purchased 3 of these - one of this size and 2 of the next size down. All of these fixed the issues that I was having with my shades. They are easy to install, set up and use. These are a little pricey, but definitely a lot less than purchasing a whole new shade. Worth every penny - because they work!
It worked, had the parts I needed. I've only had one spring failure in five years. I would prefer being able to buy a kit with just the springs.
The replacement MCD kit worked great for me. My original internal spring was completely twisted and failed.
New Spring Installation Steps
Remove the blind from the RV.
Mine had three mounting clips. I took the blind home to work on a flat surface.
Loosen the Allen screw on the top of the left bracket (left side when facing the blind with the MCD logo toward you).
Roll the blind out fully on a clean, flat work surface. I used my kitchen island.
Locate the spring mechanism on the left side.
With the blind rolled out, the spring cartridge is easy to pull out using long-nose pliers.
Insert the new spring mechanism.
Push it in and rotate it until the tabs align with the internal slots.
Roll the blind back onto the cylinder evenly and straight.
Reinstall the blind into the bracket.
Slide the end into place, leaving a small gap so the blind edge doesn’t rub or bind.
Tighten the Allen screw on the bracket.
Set initial spring tension.
On the left bracket, locate the black tension slot.
Turn it clockwise with a small screwdriver 15 full turns to preload the spring.
Test the blind.
Hold the blind by the left bracket with your left hand.
Pull the blind down about half its length.
Check the rewind action.
Pull it down slightly and release.
If it doesn’t fully roll up, add 5 more clockwise turns to the tensioner.
Repeat tension adjustments as needed.
If it still stops short, add a few more turns.
If it snaps up too fast or feels tight at the top, the tension is too high—turn the tensioner counter-clockwise to reduce tension.
Reinstall the blind assembly in the RV.
Final Result
When properly tensioned, the blind should roll up smoothly and stop gently at the top.
It was exactly what I needed and fit was excellent. Easy install. Would have given 5 stars but the included paperwork didn’t have install instructions, a url or a QR code to view instructions online that I could find.
High quality product but. Think the installation instructions could be better. Given I’m replacing an existing component, guidance on how to tension and configure more clearly would be appreciated. Otherwise the quality of the product is excellent.
