How To Convert 2018 Keystone Cougar 311RLS 5th Wheel To Work With Gooseneck Ball In Truck Bed

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 10/29/2025

Question:

We have a 2018 Keystone Cougar 311RLS that shows a Lippert 1116 box - we want to convert to work with ball hitch. but it seems we only tow maybe 12,000 lb loaded. Is MR77MV a good fit, or should we pick something else?

Hey Diane! Yes, the MORryde GooseTech # MR77MV is a solid fit for your 2018 Keystone Cougar 311RLS 5th wheel travel trailer.

Your loaded weight ~12,000 lb falls nicely within the 11,500–14,000 lb class that the # MR77MV covers. It's also the Lippert 1116 pattern so you won't need anything else! It also has built-in rubber blocks for shock absorption so that you have a more comfortable, smoother ride on your journeys!

What vehicle are you using to tow this trailer?

Thanks, Andrew! We’re towing with a 2022 Chevy 3500 HD Duramax crew-cab short bed. Do I need to worry about turning clearance when switching to the GooseTech setup?

@Diane Great follow-up, Diane; with your short-bed 3500 you should still be fine. The GooseTech # MR77MV keeps the same geometry as your factory 1116 pin box, so turning clearance doesn’t change much. If you ever get close on tight turns, you can run an offset gooseneck ball for extra cab room; if you want to go this route you'll need to tell me the truck year make and model, along with what gooseneck hitch is in the truck bed (OEM, curt, drawtite etc.). And since you’re going to a gooseneck connection, don’t forget the required safety chains # 49150 to stay DOT-compliant.
