Are Dexter And Lippert ABS Brakes Interchangeable On 4,400lb Axles?

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 10/28/2025

Question:

Are these 4.4K ABS brakes compatible with Lippert 4,400-lb axles?

Steve, they’re not - the Dexter ABS Brake Assemblies # DX83WR are designed for Dexter’s ABS Tow Assist 4.4K axles and won’t clear the flange profile used on Lippert axles. The offset and magnet alignment differ just enough to cause interference. Also, the main thing is that the ABS connections are different and won't be cross-compatible with the ABS systems. If you’ve got a Lippert axle, you’ll need to stick with Lippert-specific ABS brake assembly.

Do you happen to know your axle tag number? That’ll confirm whether it’s Dexter or Lippert so I can help point you the right direction.

Thanks for the info. I checked and my tag says Lippert, but it does have the Tow Assist light on the front of the trailer. Is that still a no-go for these Dexter brakes?

@Steve Good question, Steve; even though Lippert now uses a similar ABS-style light on some models, the Dexter Tow Assist components and sensor connectors are completely different. The 4.4K # DX83WR brakes will only sync with Dexter’s Tow Assist module. If your system light is labeled “Lippert Sway Command” or just “ABS,” it’s using Lippert’s proprietary setup - so definitely stick with Lippert replacements. If you’re ever unsure, a clear photo of your axle tag and harness plugs can confirm it. Want to send one over? I’ll help you verify which system you’ve got.
