How to Add a Stop Light Switch Circuit on a 2016 Ford Escape for a Brake Controller

Updated 10/24/2025 | Published 10/23/2025

Question:

I have a 2016 Ford Escape that had no factory trailer package installed. I see that the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite RED44FR is compatible with the Ford 2016 Escape, but what would I connect the red, 12V Brake Light Trigger wire to? thanks for taking the time to respond! Fred

Hey Fred!

I know I mentioned this in the comment you left on the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR video, but I wanted to share it here as well!

When I looked online, I saw some of the concerns you have about the BCM and it potentially being an issue. You can either try tapping into the 3rd brake light, or you can use the Roadmaster Universal Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751000 to make a stop light signal that's separate from any brake light circuits on your 2016 Escape.

Does that help at all?

@FredR Happy to help out! I've had vehicles with electrical issues before in the past and I know it's no fun to mess with, so anything that leaves the OEM wiring intact as it's own system is a plus for me.
