Can I Use Any Prime Guard Antifreeze In Camper AND Pontoon Boat?

Published 10/20/2025

Question:

Can I use the same Prime Guard antifreeze in both my camper and my pontoon boat?

Expert Reply:

Absolutely! All three Prime Guard formulas - # PG56ZR, # PG36ZR, and # PG96ZR - are safe for both RV and marine systems. They’re safe for potable water lines, pumps, and even outboard engine water jackets. Just be sure to flush thoroughly in spring, and it's best to stick with one type of base, rather than mixing ethanol-based with propylene glycol-based.

Which antifreeze brands do you normally use to winterize them?

When you say it’s okay for outboard engines, does that mean I can run the Prime Guard straight through the motor, or do I need to drain the water first?

@Steve Hey Steve, you’ll still want to drain the raw water first, then draw the Prime Guard antifreeze (any of the # PG56ZR, # PG36ZR, or # PG96ZR) through the cooling system using a flush attachment or muffs. That way it replaces any leftover water and coats the internal passages evenly. Once you see solid pink coming out the boat exhaust, you’re fully winterized. The key is using an RV/marine-safe antifreeze like Prime Guard since it’s non-toxic and won’t harm seals or impellers. What size outboard are you running?
